The Manager and Office Staff

A large Practice such as Penryn requires a considerable administrative infrastructure to maintain its services.  Our manager, Mrs Ann Kerr, is responsible for the day to day running of the Practice, its building, finance, planning and coordinating services and staff matters - anything non medical.  Working alongside is the deputy manager Mrs Debbie Hosen, the reception and clerical team, the dispensary staff, cleaners and caretaker.  They are all vital to the smooth running of the surgery.

Practice Nurses

Their responsibilities include general nursing such as routine injections, travel advice and innoculations, dressings and follow up of injuries, removal of sutures, ear syringing and telephone advice on minor illness.  They also run clinics for asthma, aural hygiene, coronary heart disease, diabetes, prostatic assessment, spirometry and well person.

Registrar and Other Doctors

We are a training practice which means we have a GP Registrar working with us for a year at a time.  A Registrar is a fully trained doctor usually with several years wide-ranging experience working in hospital before coming to General Practice.  The Registrar year is generally the final step before seeking a permanent post as a GP principal.

There are times when we have medical and nursing students sitting in with the doctor - if you would rather be seen alone please do not hesitate to say so.

District & Community Nurse Team

Our community nurses provide nursing care and advice to patients who are housebound due to illness or infirmity and to patients recently discharged from hospital.  They can be contacted through the receptionists at Penryn.  Our team is led by Lynda Drummond.

Health Visitors

All families with children under 5 years have a named health visitor.  A well baby and child drop in clinic is held at Penryn Surgery every Tuesday between 10am and 12pm.  A clinic is also held at Stithians on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month between 11am and 12pm.  No appointments are necessary.  Health visitors also provide health information, advice and support for all age groups and have a special interest in health promotion.  They can be contacted on 01326 434782.

Community Midwife

Our Midwife, Tina Corbett, provides care and advice to women before, during and after pregnancy.  Antenatal clinics are held in Penryn on Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons, and in Stithians on Wednesday mornings.  They can be contacted through the Penryn receptionists or by ringing 01326 434776.

Community Paediatrician

The GPs of the practice provide new baby checks and more recently the 6-8 week baby checks, which your baby will be invited to attend.  Development problems are referred to the community paediatrician, who holds clinics at Penryn and Falmouth.

Community Psychiatric Nurses (CPNs), Psychologists and Counsellors

We have a team of community psychiatric nurses based at Falmouth, for mental health problems and care for those patients with severe and enduring mental illness.  Our counsellors provide care for less severe problems and we have access to psychologists and other therapists.

Chiropodist

Chiropody clinics for the over 65s and diabetics are held in the Penryn Surgery.  Please ask the receptionists for details.  Your doctor can also refer you for treatment of specific foot conditions at any age.

Dietician

The dietician is available at the surgery by referral from your GP or the Practice Nurse, for advice about a range of dietary related conditions, particularly diabetic and cholesterol lowering diets.

Macmillan Nurse

The Macmillan Service is based in Truro and we are fortunate to have one nurse attached to the surgery giving care and advice to patients with cancer and other serious illnesses, and their families.

Stop Smoking Advisor

Christine Cowe is working at the surgery through the Health Promotion service to provide counselling and support for patients who wish to stop smoking.  You can ask your doctor to refer you or you can self-refer through our receptionists.  Once referred patients will receive information from Christine about how to stop smoking and this will be followed with up with counselling sessions and support medication.
